Description | Center-right and oldest Muslim party in Afghanistan, known more informally as Jamiat. Party began as a mujahideen group battling Soviet forces in the Soviet-Afghan War and was the nation's most powerful. Party was founded and led by the President of Afghanistan (June 28, 1992 – December 22, 2001) Burhanuddin Rabbani, assassinated in 2011, and has been led since by his son, Afghanistan's former Foreign Minister, Salahuddin Rabbani. Party holds 62 of 249 seats in Afghanistan's lower house. |
