DescriptionLeft-of-center successor to the Union of Communists of Montenegro (disbanded in 1991) founded by Communist leader Momir Bulatović, who was also the first president of DPS. After Montenegro's declaration of independence in 2006, party espoused a policy of favoring ethnic Montenegrins and "Montenegrinization" (Црногоризација) or forced assimilation. Party also advanced the creation of an autocephalous Orthodox Church in Montenegro (i.e., an Orthodox Church appointing its own head in Montenegro rather than being an adjunct of the Church in Serbia). Civil war between two wings of the DPS, one led by its president, Bulatović, and the other by Milo Đukanović (Montenegro's future oft-time president and prime minister), resulted in victory for Đukanović's wing in 1998. Bulatović's wing broke away in 1998 to form a new party called the Socialist People's Party of Montenegro (SNP). The DPS commanded unbroken authority over Montenegro from 1991 until 2020, when it became the nation's largest opposition party for the first time. Party still has the largest presence in Parliament, with 29 mandates as of January 2023. MP Danijel Živković took control as acting president of DPS on April 6, 2023 following the resignation of Milo Đukanović following his loss to Jakov Milatović in the April 2, 2023 presidential run-off election [Demokratska partija socijalista (DPS)].
