Left-of-center, anti-NATO, anti-West party ostensibly representing Russian minority interests in Latvia.
Party was the result of a merger of four left-leaning parties in 2009, the People's Harmony Party (NSP), the New Center, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and (in January 2011) the Daugavpils City Party (DPP). Merged party chose MP Jānis Urbanovičs as its Chairman (re-elected in 2019).
The new party set out to sign cooperation agreements in 2011 with United Russia and the Chinese Communist Party which allows for strategic coordination between them.
