Description | Marxist-Leninist party banned in Finland for supporting and joining the Soviet Union in its war against Finland, aka, the Winter War (November 30, 1939 – March 13, 1940; also known as First Soviet-Finnish War). Party founders also took arms against fellow Finns during the Finnish Civil War (January 27, 1918 – May 15, 1918). Party was re-established in Finland under pressure from the Soviet Union in October 1944 and later, through partnership with the Finnish People's Democratic Union (SKDL), the party participated in several governments from the 1960s to the 1980s and was one of the largest parties in parliament. Charges of accommodation with the Soviet Union or 'Finlandization' because of the SKP's involvement in government affairs began to hit at Finland's image starting in the mid-80s and the SKP began to collapse in popularity and representation in Parliament. Party then went bankrupt in 1992, de-registered itself, dissolved in 1996, then fell off the wagon for many years until re-registering itself on March 1, 2021 [Suomen Kommunistinen Puolue (SKP)]. |
