Description | Right-of center party founded by a major force in the Mongolian Democratic Union movement which led to the 1989 Democratic Revolution, MP and political scientist S. Erdene. Erdene sat behind the scenes as chairman of the localised "Democratic Party of Bayangol District" [Link] until his election as the Party's national chairman on February 12, 2017.
Party was strengthened on December 6, 2000 by a merger of five center-right parties - the Mongolian National Democratic Party (1992-1999); the Mongolian Social Democratic Party (1990-1999); the Mongolian Religious Democratic Party; the Mongolian Democratic Renaissance Party (1991-1992); and the Mongolian Democratic Party (1990-1992).
Its party leader since 2004, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, became Prime Minister from August 20, 2004 to January 13, 2006 and President from 2009 to 2017. Party continued to hold on to the presidency after the election of June 26, 2017 in the form of Khaltmaagiin Battulga, in spite of disastrous results on the parliamentary level a year before (taking only six out of 76 seats).
