Description | Center-left populist party founded by allies of Getúlio Vargas, who served as the 14th and 17th president of Brazil, from 1930 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1954. Party was banned on October 27, 1965 after a military-led coup d'état in 1964. Party was re-founded by journalist Ivete Vargas, who was Getúlio's niece, on November 21, 1979, upon the military regime's loosening of an imposed two-party system. Party dissolved on November 9, 2023 after merging with Patriota to form the Democratic Renewal Party on October 26, 2022. Party was led by Marcus Vinícius Neskau from April 7, 2023 until its dissolution [Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB)]. |
