Description | Center-left to left-wing party begun as a coalition of five democratic-socialist to Marxist–Leninist parties, anchored by Synaspismos, a leftist coalition led by Greece's future Prime Minister (from 2015 to 2019), and leader of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras. Party's image as 'anti-establishment' during the Greek government-debt crisis (known as The Crisis or Η Κρίση in Greece) propelled it to become Greece's largest party after emergency elections held on January 25, 2015, taking control of government in partnership with right-of-center coalition ANEL. SYRIZA's popularity dwindled substantially after the public felt it didn't adequately deal with Greece's financial troubles, and it fell into opposition after elections held on July 7, 2019. Tsipras resigned on June 29, 2023 after the party suffered massive defeat in two elections held in May 21 and June 25, 2023 [SYRIZA is an acronym for Coalition of the Radical Left – Progressive Alliance (Συνασπισμός Ριζοσπαστικής Αριστεράς – Προοδευτική Συμμαχία; SYRIZA is also a pun on the Greek adverb σύρριζα, meaning "from the roots" or "radically")]. |
