| Description | Left-wing Russophilic successor to the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party (established on August 2, 1891) which later in 1903 became the Bulgarian Workers' Social Democratic Party (BRSDP), then the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) in 1919.
The BCP became the nation's sole political party after September 9, 1944, until reformists toppled Bulgaria's last Communist President, Todor Zhivkov, on November 10, 1989. Reformist forces then renamed the BCP the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) in early 1990. The BSP still takes positions linking it closely with Russian interests (often anti-European Union, anti-NATO, pro-Russian takeover of Crimea, etc.), and is commonly known as the "Centenarian" (Столетницата, Stoletnitsata) since the party was 100 year's old when it changed its name that year.
Party has been chaired by MP Cornelia Ninova since May 8, 2016 [Bulgarska sotsialisticheska partiya (BSP)]. |
