Party began as the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) founded by the former chairman of the SLovak Democratic Coalition and prime minister Mikuláš Dzurinda. Six year's later it merged with the Democratic Party to form the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union - Democratic Party, opting to call itself by its acronym SDKÚ-DS since January 21, 2006. The SDKÚ-DS debuted to pick up 31 mandates (out of 150) in elections held on January 17, 2006 and became the second-largest party in the nation. It continued to maintain 2nd place in 2010 and joined a ruling coalition. Poor governing performance combined with internal disarray started to hit the party beginning in 2010, and it witnessed a gradual disintegration of its membership, culminating in a wipeout in elections held on March 5, 2016 (party picked up a total of 6,938 votes). Party had since 2017 been leaderless and inactive until on July 1, 2023, Branislav Rybárik took it over and decided to register the party for elections held on September 30, 2023 [Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party; Slovenská demokratická a kresťanská únia – Demokratická strana (SDKÚ–DS)] |
