Description | Right-of-center, Slovak-nationalist party and ideological heir to the historical Slovak National Party, which was established in 1871 and banned by Nazi occupiers in 1938. Party took special pride in being at the forefront of inaugurating an independent Slovakia on January 1, 1993, and has since considered itself the chief exponent of Slovak identity, traditions and values. Party partnered with Robert Fico's socialist Smer-SD-led coalition in 2006, and again in 2016, and continues to work with Fico to establish him as prime minister in 2023. Party has been chaired since 2012 by Andrej Danko, who was the 9th Speaker of the National Council [Slovenská národná strana (SNS)]. |
