DescriptionRight-of-center, economically liberal Islamist party and successor to the Islamic Action group formed as a party on June 6, 1981 as the "Mouvement de la tendance islamique" (MTI), which wound up banned by decree. Party reemerged eight years later as the Mouvement Ennahdha (Renaissance Movement). Ennahdha was co-founded by Rached Ghannouchi who has been its chairman since November 1991. Ennahdha became the nation's largest by seats obtained in elections held in 2011, and continued to dominate after the next two elections held in 2014 and 2019. Party endorsed multi-party democracy early on, distinguishing it from many other Islamist parties in the region, and recognizes itself as following a more "pragmatic path" [حركة النهضة; Ḥarakat an-Nahḍa (NAH); Mouvement Ennahda (ME)].
