Description | Socialist party and self-styled successor to the Americo-Liberian or Congau-led Progressive Alliance of Liberia (PAL), formed by US-born activist Gabriel Baccus Matthews in 1975. UPP's link to the PAL, which was forced underground after leading mass rioting against the government in 1979, made it an enemy of the state after Samuel Doe staged a violent coup d'etat in April 1980 that left him de facto leader of Liberia. Doe's assassination on September 9, 1990 brought the UPP and PAL back to life, allowing its leader, Gabriel Baccus Matthews, to become foreign minister in 1993. |
