Description | Right-of-center party rebranded from the Vlaams Blok (VB), a right-wing Flemish-nationalist party banned on November 9, 2004 which preached secession from Belgium and the independence of Flanders. Party has attempted to soften its links to the philosophies of its banned predecessor, but suffered through a decade's long decline in support due to internal strife until 2018. Party witnessed a surprise resurgence after seeing dramatic gains in Federal, Regional and European elections held on May 26, 2019. Momentum has placed it at the top in support according to polls ahead of the 2024 Belgian Chamber and Flanders-regional elections. Party has been led by author and MP Tom Van Grieken since October 19, 2014. Party's Francophone counterpart is Chez Nous, which, ironically, preaches Belgian nationalism, (aka, "Belgicism"), a philosophy which allows no room for autonomy for the Flemish Community [Vlaams Belang (VB)]. |
