Left wing Hutu-interests party joined uneasily in a Tutsi-led administration in the early 1990s. Party later split off to lead an insurrection of Hutus against Tutsi dominance, known as the Burundi Civil War, which lasted from 1993 to 2005. Party effectively disappeared for a time after withdrawing itself from contesting for seats in the National Assembly on February 21, 2008 after intra-party struggles brought about by the leadership of Jean Minani. Party split and reemerged as the FRODEBU-Nyakuri party led by Keffa Nibizi and the Sahwanya-FRODEBU party led by Léonce Ngendakumana. Both are presidential candidates in the May 20, 2020 elections [Front for Democracy in Burundi; Front pour la Démocratie au Burundi (FRODEBU)].
