DescriptionSecularist, far-left opposition party with roots in Marxist-Leninism established and led until his death on October 8, 2012 by journalist and political scientist José Merino del Río. Party became the predominant left-wing party of Costa Rica, supplanting the Costa Rican Communist Party (renamed the Political Vanguard in 1943). Though popular in Costa Rica's peripheral provinces, Frente Amplio has been unable to gain traction, reaching a high point under the leadership and presidential candidacy of José María Villalta in 2014 when it reached third place nationally. Party currently has one representative in the Assembly [Frente Amplio (FA)].
