Description | Left-of-center federation of 23 cantonal parties officially renamed the "The Swiss GREENS" (Greens in all caps in the French and Italian versions) in March 2021 (Les VERTES suisses; VERDI svizzeri [Link] and GRÜNE Schweiz in 2014. Party was predominantly a northern, German-speaking environmentalist party until 2003, when it started to see gains in the French-speaking west (particularly, in the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Neuchâtel) and moved to the left on social/political issues unrelated to traditional "green" tenets or aims. Party reached its highest level after Federal legislative elections held on October 20, 2019, taking 28 out of 200 seats in the National Council and breaking through the Council of States to take 5 out of 46 seats. Party has been led since June 2019 by National Council member Balthasar Glättli, a strong proponent of 'basic income' theories who took over in June 2004 the Zurich chapter of The Greens from Jürg Grossen when he departed to form the rival Liberal Greens party [old name in common use: Parti écologiste suisse (Les Verts); Grüne Partei der Schweiz (Grüne); Partito ecologista svizzero (I Verdi)]. |
