Description | One-time Falangist turned Marxist-Socialist populist party which emerged from a movement led and founded by Filemón Escobar to defend the interests of indigenous coca growers in Cochabamba. Escobar's party, at first known as the Movimiento al Socialismo-Unzaguista (MAS-U), and allied with other indigenous parties of this nascent coca growers' movement, merged with the Confederation of Workers of the Cochabamba Tropics led by future president Evo Morales, and the Instrumento de Soberanía Popular (ISP). The new merged party was named Movimiento al Socialismo – Instrumento Político por la Soberanía de los Pueblos (MAS–IPSP), and leadership was assumed by Evo Morales on July 23, 1997. The party was successful after general elections held on December 18, 2005, and Evo Morales become President of Bolivia on January 22, 2006, until his resignation amid national protests on November 10, 2019 after the Organization of American States (OAS) released a report alleging electoral fraud took place in the general election held on October 20, 2019. Morales' Minister of Economy, Luis Arce was chosen the party's presidential candidate ahead of general elections held on October 18, 2020, and succeeded in taking office on November 8, 2020. Political tensions stemming from a power struggle between Arce and former President Morales and intense economic mismanagement brought Bolivia to its knees by 2025, resulting in devastation for the party after elections held on August 17, 2025, which saw it collapse from almost complete national parliamentary and regional dominance to just 3.17% popular support. Party has been led by Grover Garcia since May 5, 2024 [Movement for Socialism – Political Instrument for the Sovereignty of the Peoples; Movimiento al Socialismo – Instrumento Político por la Soberanía de los Pueblos (MAS or MAS-IPSP)]. |
