Center-right party established after democratization hit the nation in 1989. Party was able to take on and win the presidency in July 29, 2001 under Fradique de Menezes (who later split from the party to join another set up just for him). Party nominated Carlos Vila as its presidential candidate in 2021.
Party is led by former Prime Minister (November 25, 2014 to December 3, 2018) Patrice Emery Trovoada, son of its founder Miguel Trovoada, and holds 25 seats in the 55-seat Assembly [Acção Democrática Independente (ADI)].
