Military-linked creation of strongman and president Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taïa (1984-2005). Party was the nation's predominant during Ould Taïa's 21-year rule. Ould Taïa led a bloodless coup against Mauretania's military commander at the time, Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidalla, then crafted a party (initially known as the Democratic and Social Republican Party, PRDS) in 1992 after instituting multi-party elections set to take place on January 24, 1992. It remains the longest-ruling party in Mauritanian history. After a coup which overthrew Ould Taïa in 2005, the party changed its name to the Republican Party for Democracy and Renewal (PRDR), though this didn't avail to benefit it at all - it collapsed to seven seats after elections held in 2006. Party was dissolved by the Mauritanian Ministry of Interior on October 19, 2023 after it failed to obtain the minimum one percent of the vote in two of the last elections held in 2023 [الحزب الجمهوري للديموقراطية والتجديد Parti républicain pour la démocratie et le renouvellement].
