Marxist party founded in August 15, 1926 as the Communist Party of Cyprus (KKK), which was made illegal by the British administrators of Cyprus in 1931 at the time of the October Uprising against the British crown. Party then submerged itself within its subordinate party, the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL), in 1941, and 'merged' with it in November 1944. AKEL holds 15 of 56 seats in parliament. Party also led the first and only Communist government in Cyprus (and Western Europe) from 2008 to 2013, with the Presidency of Dimitris Christofias [Ανορθωτικό Κόμμα Εργαζόμενου Λαού; Anorthotikó Kómma Ergazómenou Laoú (AKEL)].
