Description | Liberal to Socialist pro-democratization party which stewarded Nepal to a parliamentary democracy in the 1950's after the fall of the Rana Dynasty in 1951, and led Nepal's first democratically elected government in 1959.
Party is the result of a merger of the defunct Nepali National Congress and Nepal Democratic Congress, effected on April 9, 1950. Party survived under the Panchayat System, which was a party-free civil society formulated and led by Nepal's King Mahendra after he dissolved the parliament in 1960. This "National Guidance" system, brought about unrest and lasted until January 18-19 1990. The unrest incited revolutionary fervor and violently minded parties to civil war and armed insurrection, resulting, ultimately, in the overthrow of the monarchy in 2006 by a coalition of Maoists, Marxist-Leninists and the Nepali Congress. |
