| Description | Right-of-center pro-democratization opposition party founded by Abulfat Ahmadov (deceased). Party has been chaired by 2008 and 2013 presidential candidate, and former Civil Unity Party faction leader, Iqbal Aghazade since December 15, 2002. Aghazade was arrested along with 17 members of his family on October 17, 2003 for involvement in a demonstration in front of the Embassy of Iran, and imprisoned for 3 years. Party has been openly critical of constitutional changes allowing the president to serve more than two terms (the referendum of 2009) and increasing the term to seven years (referendum of 2016) [Azərbaycan Ümid Partiyası (AUP); Hope of Azerbaijan Party, shortened to the unofficial 'Party of Hope']. |
