Description | Center-left party formed after the liberalization of Rwanda in 1990 by Hutu President and dictator Juvénal Habyarimana (assassinated in 1994; said to have been on orders from Rwandan Patriotic Front leader Paul Kagame, Rwanda's current Tutsi president). Party stood alone as the only opponent to the Habyarimana regime. Party members were persecuted and slaughtered by Hutu militias on a murdering spree after the assassination of Habyarimana in 1994 (called the Rwandan Genocide). Party is led by the former president of the Senate, Vincent Biruta, who has been Rwanda's foreign minister since November 2019. Party holds 5 seats in the 80-seat Chamber of Deputies [Parti social-démocrate du Rwanda (PSD)]. |
