Description | Hutu-supremacist party and armed group founded by the first elected President of Rwanda from 1962 to 1973, Grégoire Kayibanda. Party began in June 1957 as the Hutu Social Movement, then was renamed in 1961 the "Parmehutu" (acronym for Parti du Mouvement de l'Emancipation Hutu; or Hutu Emancipation Movement Party). Parmehutu was the only party permitted to operate during the term of Kayibanda's regime, until he was overthrown in a coup d'état on July 5, 1973 by his defense minister, Juvénal Habyarimana. Parmehutu transformed into an armed militia upon the emergence in 1959 of the Tutsi UNAR party and its armed militia, which demanded the restoration of the Tutsi monarchy and independence for the Ruanda-Urundi. In spite of the party's instant dissolution by coup leader Habyarimana, elements of its armed militia were incorporated into the new regime's fight against a Tutsi insurgency. Party was also known as the Republican Democratic Movement – Parmehutu [Mouvement démocratique républicain – Parmehutu (MDR-Parmehutu)]. |
