DescriptionRuling party and successor to the defunct Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA) formed as a political vehicle for Burma's military (the Tatmadaw) in 1993. Party was inaugurated shortly after new election laws were announced in March 2010, and instantly became one of Burma's two principal parties (the other being the now banned National League for Democracy (NLD) led by the former State Counsellor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi). Party took 129 seats in the 224-seat House of Nationalities (Amyotha Hluttaw) in the November 7, 2010 general elections. Party was founded and chaired (until May 1, 2013) by Burma's eighth president Thein Sein. Despite the initiation of wide-ranging reforms beginning in 2011, Thein Sein failed to obtain the support of the public beginning in 2012, and saw the USDP's seat level in parliament collapse to 11 after elections held on November 8, 2015. Thein Sein resigned as Burma President on March 30, 2016. The USDP re-assumed the presidency under acting president Myint Swe beginning on February 1, 2021, after supporting the 2021 military coup d'état. The USDP subsequently dominated the newly-constituted and ruling State Administration Council when it was formed on February 2, 2021, until its re-constitution by the military on September 25, 2023 (the USDP now holds 4 out of 18 seats). The USDP is the first and so far only party to register for future elections under the new Political Parties Registration Law. The USPD has been chaired by former immigration minister Khin Yi since September 12, 2022 [ပြည်ထောင်စုကြံ့ခိုင်ရေးနှင့် ဖွံ့ဖြိုးရေးပါတီ (USDP)].
