Center-left party supporting Rakhine minority interests reborn from the Arakan League for Democracy formed on September 27 1989 and dissolved upon merger with the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party to form the Arakan National Party on March 6, 2014. Party was founded and led by Aye Tha Aung, former deputy speaker of Burma's National Assembly and longtime ally of National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. After the February 1, 2021 coup d'état, Aye Tha Aung was placed under house arrest by the Myanmar Armed Forces. His party was banned along with 40 unregistered parties on March 28, 2023.
