| Description | Right-of-center Maronite Christian party founded by Lebanon's 7th president (assassinated before taking office on September 14, 1982) and militia commander, Bachir Gemayel. Party began as the military wing of the Kataeb Party in the 15-year Lebanese Civil War begun in 1975. Militia was taken over by current party leader Samir Geagea after Gemayel's assassination. Geagea dissolved the militia and turned the Lebanese Forces into a political party in 1990 [Forces libanaises (FL); القوات اللبنانية; al-Quwwāt al-Lubnānīyah]. |
