Leftist party launched by the CAR's future President Ange-Félix Patassé in opposition to the second reign of CAR's first president David Dacko in 1981. Dacko abolished all parties except his own (MESAN) starting in November 1962 [a ban which continued on after a military coup led by Colonel Jean-Bédel Bokassa on December 31, 1965 (who later coronated himself on December 4, 1977 as "Emperor Bokassa")].
The MLPC re-emerged and registered the year parties were allowed to exist again in 1991. Party picked up the largest number of seats in the legislative elections held on August 22, 1993 - 34 out of 85 contested seats - and Patassé became president on October 22, 1993. Party is popular among the Sara people, Nilotes residing in the northwestern areas of CAR [(Mouvement pour la Libération du Peuple Centrafricain (MLPC)].
