Description | Center-right, anti-Communist, opposition party founded during the Perestroika era as the "Belarusian Popular Front". Party was forced to initialize 'Belarusian Popular Front' to 'BPF' by Presidential decree in 2005. The BPF primarily focused on reviving a Belarus culture subdued by centuries of Russian control, and sought a 'national rebirth' for Belarus after the dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 26, 1991. Party leader Ryhor Kastusioŭ among other members were arrested on April 12, 2021 and accused of planning a coup against Premier Alexander Lukashenko following the regime's crackdown on protesters. The Belarus KGB subsequently took steps against the entire party management and effected the party's dissolution and ban on August 14, 2023 [Партыя БНФ; Partiya BNF (PBNF or BPF)]. |
