Description | Единая Россия
Yedinaya Rossiya
United Russia is the party of power in the Russian Federation, and is unofficially the party of President Vladimir Putin. It was formed in 2001 by a merger of Yuri Luzhkov's Fatherland-All Russia and Sergey Shoigu's Unity Party. United Russia first took part in Duma elections in 2003, where it dominated all others and took 38% of the vote. Since the election, many Independent members and those of other parties have switched to United Russia, giving it insurmountable power in the legislative branch.
United Russia is not an ideological party as its purpose is to support the policies of the Kremlin, first under President Putin and now under President Medvedev, though neither are official members of the party. They refer to themselves as centrist, and are generally socially-conservative.
Leader: Vladimir Putin
International Affiliation: None; has applied to join the Centrist Democrat International. |
