Description | Center-right party born from the National Renewal Alliance (ARENA), created by the military dictatorship established after the Coup d'état in Brazil in 1964 with the purpose of providing it political support. Upon ARENA's dissolution on December 20, 1979, the Alliance was renamed the Social Democratic Party (PDS), which was later rebranded the Progressive Party (PP) founded on May 27, 1993 and registered (and rebranded again) on September 14, 1995 as the Brazilian Progressive Party (PPB) after a merger with the Progressive Reform Party (PPR). Party went through another rebranding period between 2003 to 2017, when during that time, it changed back to Progressive Party. Party then settled on "Progressives" ("Progressistas") on August 16, 2017 in an attempt to attract new voters. Party became the nation's 4th largest in 2023, taking 49 seats in the 513-seat Federal Chamber of deputies after the last election, and holds the largest number of mayoralships in the federative unit of Rio Grande do Sul. Party has been led by Senator Ciro Nogueira since April 11, 2013 [Progressistas (PP)]. |
