The PNP is generally the Puerto Rican version of the Republican Party, but are not as strongly allied as the Popular Democratic Party is to the mainland Democrats. They are known as the "Statehood" party for their strong desire for Puerto Rico to be the 51st state, which almost occurred a couple of years ago in a referendum.
The Estadistas as of the 2008 elections own the governor's mansion, the Congressional delegate seat, and have supermajorities in both houses of the legislature. |
