Description | The DR's leading party founded by its first president, Juan Bosch (February 27, 1963 – September 25, 1963). Party's founding fathers (in particular, Bosch) affiliated themselves very closely with Cuba's Communist Party, launching campaigns from Cuba proper to overthrow the DR's Trujillo government (it is said with the aid of the CIA).
Ahead of the DR's 2020 general election, the PLD brought within its umbrella eleven political organizations: the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), the Democratic Movement (MODA), the Civic Renewal Party (PCR), the Christian Democratic Union Party (UDC), the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR), the Popular Christian Party (PPC), Party of Liberal Action (PAL), Popular Democratic Party (PDP), Independent Revolutionary Party (PRI), National Citizen Will Party (PNVC) and the Possible Country Party (PP).
The PLD has been placed into some constraint after its star member, former President Leonel Fernández, suddenly departed with allies to form a new party called the People's Party (PP) in October 2019.
Party is led by the DR's current President (since August 16, 2012), Danilo Medina, and Juan Temistocles Montás [Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD)]. |
