Description | Center-left party founded by the nation's first democratically-elected president, Juan Bosch, who held that office for only 9 months (February 27, 1963 – September 25, 1963). Party was unable to gain traction under Bosch until his departure from the scene in 1996, when his replacement, Leonel Fernández, wound up president of the Dominican Republic that year, and two more terms thereafter. Party became the largest in Parliament for ten years beginning in 2006. Accusations of corruption and criminal charges against Fernández, forced his departure as leader of the party. He was succeeded by Danilo Medina, who became the nation's 53rd President on August 16, 2012 [Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD)]. |
