| Description | Far-left feminist party and the nation's oldest and largest. Party was founded by nationally-known Communist activist, political prisoner and writer Lidia Falcón O'Neill, who remains the party's leader at age 87. Party began in Barcelona at the tail end of the Spanish Transition (transición española) after the death of Gen. Francisco Franco on November 20, 1975. Falcón made a big splash by adding to the party's executive committee many of the most accomplished and famous women of the day, including TV journalist Carmen Sarmiento, archaelogist María Encarna Sanahuja, and economist Mercedes Izquierdo. Party considers itself a prime defender and promoter of women's interests, doing so from Marxist interpretation of reality. Party opposes trans-sexuality and the Transsexuality Law project, considering it "a law that eliminates the anthropological and Marxist categories of both women and men." It also denounces surrogacy as using women as 'chattel' and calls for the abolition of prostitution [Partido Feminista de España (PFE)]. |
