DescriptionLiberal party co-launched by the father of democratic Malawi, Elson Bakili Muluzi (president of Malawi from May 21, 1994 to May 24, 2004). Disputes with his party-launch partner and successor Bingu wa Mutharika (Malawi president from May 24, 2004 to Apr 5 2012) led Mutharika to launch his own party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in 2005, effectively gutting the UDF.

Party has attempted to remain viable and maintains a bond with the ethnic Yao people in Malawi's South.
