Zambia's ruling party from 1978 to 1981 founded by Zambia's 1st Prime Minister Mainza Chona (August 25, 1973 – May 27, 1975), who was Secretary General of UNIP until his death in 2001, and the de facto second in command in the hierarchy of Zambian politics during the period of the One Party Participatory State (1973–1991) formed under the presidency of Kenneth Kaunda (October 24, 1964 – November 2, 1991). UNIP was later uprooted as ruling party by the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) led by Frederick Chiluba after the elections of 1991 and effectively collapsed as a viable party since. UNIP hopes for a comeback under the new leadership since April 4. 2021 of 2021 presidential candidate Bishop Trevor Mwamba.
