Description | Right-of-center party long dominant in Salvadoran political life.
Party was created in 1961 as the "National Conciliation Party" (renamed later. Please see below) by members of the military to closely model the structure and methods of the Institutional Revolutionary Party of Mexico (PRI). The PCN sought to emulate the PRI's societal saturation.
Years of political mismanagement led to the Coup of 1979, and coup leaders dissolved the PCN by decree.
The PCN survived in the shadows during the Salvadoran Civil War and managed to reconstitute itself, participating in elections until it was disbanded on April 30, 2011 for lack of minimum support (legislatively ratified on September 20, 2011).
At this point the party decided to rename itself "Partido de Concertación Nacional" (National Concertation Party), as opposed to the old disbanded name of "Partido de Conciliación Nacional" (National Conciliation Party), managing to keep the same PCN acronym The PCN registered the new name in 2012.
Party is led by Manuel Rodriguez. |
