DescriptionThis party is all the members of the former East German ruling party, the Socialist Unity Party. The party has roots with the SPD but after Germany was split into 2 after World War 2, they became independant of their West German groups.

Party changed its name to the Left Party on July 17, 2005 and formed and electoral alliance with the WASG for the September 2005 Bundestag elections.
