Center-right, pro free market party reduced to minority opposition status by a series of corruption scandals from 2004 to 2005. Party was one of two that dominated Costa Rica's political landscape until 2006.
Party adheres to the populist quasi-Peronist ideals of Costa Rica's former president Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia (1940-44). Ideals are called 'Calderonism'.
Party was formed by a merger of the Christian Democratic, the Republican Calderonista, People's Union and the Democratic Renovation parties.
Party is led by Randall Quirós. Partido Unidad Socialcristiana (PUSC).
