Description | Big-tent party formerly known as Nur Otan (Radiant Fatherland) until its dissolution on March 1, 2022, forced upon it by the 2022 Kazakh Unrest, also known by its instigators as "Bloody January" (Қанды қаңтар), which began on January 2, 2022. Nur Otan was dissolved at the instigation of Kazakh President and Nur Otan leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who forced out Nur Otan's founder and long-time all-powerful Kazakhstan leader Nursultan Nazarbayev on January 28, 2022. Tokayev took control of the new party and, in effect, founded it on March 1, 2022, then resigned as its Chairman on April 26, 2022. Party chair was taken over by Erlan Qoşanov, Chief of the Mazhilis (parliament). Nur Otan's dissolution was a direct consequence of emergency actions used by the President to maintain order during the January 2022 Unrest, offering an olive branch to the public by burying the old party and replacing it with a restructured, re-branded 'big-tent' on a reformist mission. Amanat holds 76 out of 107 seats in the Mazhilis and dominates the regional mäslihats and municipal mäslihats with supermajorities [Аманат, 'Ancestral Will']. |
