Description | Marxist-Leninist party and Spain's most powerful and oldest. Though the party began to form after the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia on October 1917, the PCE was officially born as a result of the merger of the Spanish PC and the Spanish Communist Workers' Party (PCOE) on November 1921. After years of working underground, the PCE became the primary leader of the Second Spanish Republic established in April 1931, and the main opposition against the Francoist forces during and after the Spanish Civil War. Submerged underground again during the Francoist years, the PCE was legalized on April 9, 1977.
In 1985, the PCE expelled its Stalinist leadership and began an outreach campaign, launching alliances with the non-Communist left, starting in April 1986 with the "United Left" [Izquierda Unida (IU)] alliance. The PCE's general secretary is Enrique Santiago Romero [Partido Comunista de España (PCE)]. |
