Description | Following two painful election cycles in a row, New Hampshire Republicans are looking to a leader from the past to provide a strategy for the future.
Former Gov. John H. Sununu, who led the state during the 1980s and won national notoriety as President George H.W. Bush's aggressive and rough-edged chief of staff, confirmed this weekend that he would be a candidate for chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party.
Combined with the news that Fergus Cullen, the incumbent chair, will not be seeking another term at his post, Sununu's announcement makes him a virtual lock for the job, New Hampshire Republicans said.
"The field is cleared for him," said Tom Rath, the former Republican National Committeeman for New Hampshire. "I think he's been thinking about it a while."
