DescriptionGARY, Ind. -- The 2004 race for governor is in full swing at the drab and smoky Local 1066 union hall on the east side of this industrial city.

And that's not good news for Mitch Daniels, the perceived front-runner in the race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Leaders at this United Steelworkers of America local and other steel union halls in northwest Indiana are plotting what they say will be a sustained campaign against Daniels, the former White House budget director.

At Local 1066, the signs of anti-Daniels sentiment are easily spotted in a pile of bright orange fliers declaring Daniels as "bad for your job, bad for steel and bad for Indiana," and in a batch of stickers advertising a new union-funded Web site -- www.mitchlies.com.
