DescriptionThe SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has resigned with immediate effect in a row over party membership.

Mr Murrell is married to Scotland's First Minister and SNP party leader Nicola Sturgeon, who is standing down.

In a statement he said his future had become a distraction from the leadership campaign.

On Thursday, the party was forced to confirm a massive drop in its membership numbers, a situation it had previously denied.

That prompted the resignation of the SNP's head of media at Holyrood, Murray Foote, who said there were "serious issues" with statements he had issued in "good faith" on behalf of party headquarters.

And over the past week two leadership candidates have questioned the independence of the election process.
