Juliana, who as queen of the Netherlands led the nation through its recovery from World War II and Nazi occupation and oversaw the final dismantling of the Dutch colonial empire, died Saturday. She was 94.
Three of her four daughters, including Queen Beatrix, who succeeded her to the throne in 1980, were present at her death. Princess Irene and Princess Margriet were also present and her fourth daughter, Princess Christina, arrived later from the United States. Prince Willem Alexander, Juliana's grandson and the first male heir apparent to the Dutch throne since 1884, was reported returning from a visit to Austria.
Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said in a televised speech that Juliana, who reigned for 32 years, had been a queen "for the people and not for the directors" and had said she would have wanted to be a social worker if she had not become monarch, succeeding her mother, Queen Wilhelmina, in 1948. |
