Description | France Gears Up for Elections
The Honolulu Advertiser
Overshadowed by terrorism, France's regional elections are shaping up as a referendum on the government of conservative Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. The French go to the polls just a week after voters in neighboring Spain toppled the conservative government in the wake of rail bombings in Madrid, possibly linked to al-Qaida, that killed more than 200 people. Corruption scandals, labor woes and a stagnant economy have contributed to a malaise that could hurt the governing Union for a Popular Movement, or UMP, the party of President Jacques Chirac.
The opposition Socialist Party hopes to use the elections to rebound from nearly two years in the political wilderness. "For me, the backdrop has already been laid: there is a rejection of the government pending," Socialist Party campaign director Francois Rebsamen was quoted as saying. |
