DescriptionBlix: War didn't help world
The Chicago Tribune

The war in Iraq has not made the world safer, and the widening violence there has underscored the need for United Nations backing of military action, former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix said. Blix, in a wide-ranging interview on the eve of the anniversary of the Iraq war, chastised the Bush administration for its reliance on what he described as faulty intelligence in asserting that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. He also said Bush greatly underestimated the importance of UN backing when he went to war in Iraq without Security Council endorsement. "They didn't get the legitimacy they would have needed, and that legitimacy was more valuable than they thought."

As described by Blix, the Bush administration hampered the inspection team's work in two ways: by applying heavy-handed political pressure and by providing inaccurate leads that proved a waste of time. Cheney in an October 2002 meeting threatened to shut down the inspections program and initiate military action if inspectors came up empty, he said. "That was a bit brutal."
