Description | Tennessee Republicans will present plans to split booming Nashville and Davidson County into multiple congressional districts, paving the way for the party to dilute its existing Democratic voter base and gain an additional congressional seat.
House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, on Monday confirmed plans to split the 5th Congressional District. A proposed map of the new redistricting lines will not be made available until a House committee meeting on Wednesday.
"What we’re looking at is two to three splits and making sure we satisfy the Voting Rights Act, which we think we have," Sexton said. The Associated Press first reported the split plans, which Republicans for months had not ruled out. |
