Description | Germany took a step closer to the post-Merkel era on Friday.
Three weeks after a general election, leaders from three parties — the center-left Social Democrats, the Greens and the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) — agreed to start talks to form the country’s next government. If they succeed, it will be the first time such a coalition has ruled Germany and it would mark the end of 16 years of conservative-led government under Merkel.
With the veteran chancellor not running for re-election in last month’s ballot, the conservative CDU/CSU bloc known as the Union slumped to its worst-ever election result. That put the first-placed Social Democrats and their candidate for chancellor, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, in pole position to lead the next government, provided they can seal a coalition deal with the Greens and FDP. |
